Staff Report
The Faculty of Humanities and Languages at Government College Women University Faisalabad (GCWUF) inaugurated a two-day international conference titled “Iqbal’s Influence on Interfaith Dialogue and Coexistence.” The event opened with a thought-provoking inaugural session, graced by renowned scholar, columnist, and Senator Irfan-ul-Haque Siddiqui as the chief guest.
Senator Siddiqui Highlights Iqbal’s Relevance in Polarized World
In his address, Senator Siddiqui emphasized the enduring relevance of Allama Iqbal’s philosophy in today’s polarized world. “The true excellence of a human being lies in the ability to argue with reason and listen to others with understanding,” he remarked. Describing Iqbal’s thought as timeless and universal, he noted its potential to promote accurate interpretations of religion and inspire meaningful interfaith dialogue. He urged students to read Iqbal deeply, understand his vision, and internalize his teachings daily.
Vice Chancellor Emphasizes Knowledge, Character Building, and Tolerance
Delivering her address, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Kanwal Ameen (T.I.) underscored that knowledge extends beyond mere accumulation of facts and information —it serves as a foundation for character building and the pursuit of truth. She stressed the importance of mastering the art of respectful disagreement and cultivating tolerance, especially among youth. Cautioning against the widespread fake classical poetry on digital platforms, she encouraged students to rely on authentic sources. The “Echoes of Iqbal” art exhibition by the Department of Art and Design was appreciated by the chief guest, who described it as a valuable intellectual and creative initiative fostering educational and personal growth.
Scholarly Insights on Iqbal’s Legacy and Interfaith Understanding
The inaugural session also featured enriching insights from distinguished national and international scholars, including Prof. Dr. Humayun Abbas Shams (GCUF), international speaker Shiraz Ali (University of Manchester, UK), Prof. Dr. Ali Kumail Qazalbash, and Prof. Dr. Riaz Majeed. Their contributions explored Iqbal’s poetic and philosophical legacy and its implications for interfaith understanding.
