HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Authorities have arrested a woman after her 3-year-old special needs nephew was found alone and barefoot along a busy road in northwest Harris County.

According to the Harris County Precinct 1 Constable’s Office, the non-verbal child, who has autism, was discovered around 5 a.m. Wednesday.

He was wandering along the median in the 5400 block of W. Mt. Houston Road. Three concerned citizens noticed the boy and immediately called 911.

Deputies arrived quickly, ensured the child was safe, and began searching for his family.

At approximately 6 a.m., the child’s mother contacted 911 shortly after returning to her apartment in the 5700 block of W. Mt. Houston Road.

She told authorities that her son had been staying with his aunt, who was responsible for his care.

The aunt, identified as 31-year-old Sade K. Stewart, was arrested and charged with child endangerment. Child Protective Services (CPS) was also notified about the situation.

“We are thankful to the community members who spotted the boy and took action to prevent a possible tragedy,” said Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen. “It is crucial to protect our children, especially those who are most vulnerable.”

The case remains under investigation.
