Indonesia’s Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Nezar Patria, has warned citizens about the growing threat of scams powered by artificial intelligence (AI), especially deepfakes.
He stated that today’s AI-generated images and videos are so lifelike that even professionals can be fooled.
“The quality is so high that even experts sometimes can’t tell the difference,” Patria shared in a press release on Monday.
One alarming example he mentioned is the creation of fake bank transfer proofs.
Criminals are using AI to forge payment confirmations, complete with realistic-looking holograms, to trick victims into believing they’ve received funds.
“These AI-made documents can look extremely convincing,” Patria said.
Because of these risks, Patria urged users of digital platforms and financial services to stay cautious and not trust digital content blindly.
To tackle such issues, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs has issued new ethical guidelines for the responsible use of AI.
The ministry is also working closely with Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority (OJK) and Bank Indonesia.
Their goal is to develop joint strategies to stop AI-powered crimes and safeguard the public.
Patria pointed out that several existing laws are already in place to deal with tech-related offenses.
These include the Electronic Information and Transactions Law (ITE), the Personal Data Protection Law (PDP), the Criminal Code (KUHP), and the Copyright Law.
In addition, the government is currently preparing a regulation focused on the country’s AI roadmap.
This regulation aims to ensure AI is developed for good while preventing misuse.
