HOUSTON — With youth-involved violence on the rise, Crime Stoppers of Houston is urging students to take an active role in crime prevention.

At a press conference on Tuesday, officials highlighted their anonymous tip system as a key tool in stopping crime before it happens.

“We are deeply concerned about the violence among our youth. We are committed to taking action,” said Crime Stoppers CEO Rania Mankarious.

Anonymous tips have already led to major breakthroughs. In February, a tip helped University of Houston police identify sexual assault suspect Eric Brown.

Though he was mistakenly released after arrest, another tip led to his re-arrest at a Metro rail station a week later.

In another case, a tipster helped prevent a school bombing. In late February, a Spring Branch student was reported for making homemade explosives. Though no charges were filed, authorities credited the tip for preventing a possible attack.

Crime Stoppers rewarded the tipsters involved, giving $5,000 for Brown’s arrest and $2,000 for the Spring Branch case.

Rising Juvenile Crime Rates

Between 2019 and 2024, juvenile homicide charges in Texas have increased by 108%, according to the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.

In response, Crime Stoppers has expanded its outreach, conducting 308 safety presentations in the first quarter of 2024 alone.

The organization urges all students to report any suspicious activity. With guaranteed anonymity, tipsters can help law enforcement without fear.

To submit an anonymous tip, call 713-222-TIPS (8477) or visit Crime Stoppers online.
