LAHORE: Pakistan’s main health body has issued a warning about the risk of Congo fever ahead of Eid Al-Adha. The National Institute of Health (NIH) highlighted the increased risk due to the high number of animals being transported and sacrificed during the festival.

Congo fever, also known as Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF), is a viral disease transmitted through ticks and infected animal blood. It can cause severe illness and death in humans. The NIH has urged the public to take precautions to prevent the spread of the virus.

The health body advised people to wear protective clothing, use insect repellents, and avoid direct contact with animal blood and tissues. They also recommended ensuring that animals are tick-free before slaughtering them. The NIH has set up surveillance systems to monitor and control the spread of the disease.

Congo fever is endemic in Pakistan, with cases reported every year. The virus is mainly spread by ticks that infest livestock. The risk of transmission increases during Eid Al-Adha due to the large-scale movement and handling of animals.

The NIH has also called on local authorities to ensure the proper disposal of animal waste and to maintain hygiene at slaughter sites. They emphasized the importance of public awareness and education to prevent the disease.

Healthcare facilities have been instructed to be on high alert and to report any suspected cases of Congo fever immediately. The NIH has provided guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

Eid Al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most important Islamic holidays. It commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. During the festival, Muslims around the world slaughter animals to honor this event.

The NIH has reminded the public to prioritize health and safety during the celebrations. They stressed that taking preventive measures can significantly reduce the risk of Congo fever.

In addition to Congo fever, the NIH has also warned about other potential health risks during Eid Al-Adha, such as foodborne illnesses and injuries related to animal handling and slaughtering. They advised people to follow proper food safety practices and to handle animals carefully to avoid accidents.

The public is encouraged to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms of Congo fever, such as high fever, muscle pain, dizziness, and bleeding. Early diagnosis and treatment can improve the chances of recovery.

The NIH is working closely with provincial health departments, veterinary services, and other relevant agencies to ensure a coordinated response to the Congo fever risk. They are also collaborating with international health organizations to monitor the situation and implement effective control measures.

The warning from the NIH serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and precaution during festive celebrations. By following the recommended guidelines, the public can enjoy a safe and healthy Eid Al-Adha.
