HOUSTON — The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) has suspended the midwifery license of a Houston-area woman accused of performing illegal abortions at three clinics.

Maria Margarita Rojas, 48, faces felony charges for the illegal performance of an abortion and practicing medicine without a license at her clinics in Spring, Cypress, and Waller.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has also filed a lawsuit to shut down her clinics.

On March 25, TDLR issued an emergency order suspending Rojas’ license, citing concerns for public health and safety.

According to their statement, Rojas allegedly posed as a gynecologist and made critical medical decisions beyond the scope of midwifery.

Court records reveal that an anonymous tip in January led to a months-long investigation. Authorities conducted surveillance and examined clinic waste for evidence.

On March 6, the day of Rojas’ arrest, investigators interviewed a woman who had recently visited one of the clinics.

The woman claimed she was misled into believing Rojas was a licensed gynecologist.

She was told she had only a nine percent chance of a successful pregnancy and was advised to undergo a medication abortion, which she later accepted.

As the criminal case proceeds, Rojas remains under investigation, and authorities continue efforts to shut down her clinics.
