Disturbing stories like this are becoming more frequent in Texas, but this particular case stands out. It strikes a personal chord for me as I have a fifth-grade child at home.
Most incidents we hear about involve inappropriate relationships between teachers and students, usually involving high schoolers.
However, this incident occurred at an elementary school in the Austin area, prompting concerns about the broader education system. It’s important to note that it is nearly impossible to detect such behaviors unless someone has a prior record, conviction, or accusation. This is why many cases go unnoticed until they come to light.
A fifth-grade teacher at Baranoff Elementary School has been arrested on charges of possessing child pornography.
Carl David Innmon, a first-year teacher at the school, is now facing charges for allegedly possessing over 50 images or videos of child pornography. Upon being informed of the investigation on Monday, the school suspended him immediately.
In a letter to parents, Baranoff Elementary Principal Alex Hassett stated that Innmon has not returned to campus since Monday.
It remains unclear whether any of the images or videos involve children from his classroom, as the investigation is still ongoing. Innmon is currently in custody at Travis County Jail with bail set at $75,000.
