Who Is Shante?
This girl is thirty years old, and her name is Shante. She loves partying. One night, it was just an ordinary night, and she was at her friend’s house, whose name was Frye. Shante and Frye were having a good time, and they started enjoying themselves thoroughly. Both of them had a great time at the club.
A Night Out at the Club
At the club, they met some other people with whom they also had some special drinks. It was Thursday, and there were offers on special drinks. Then, around 2:30 a.m., Shante says, “Okay, we should leave now because it’s been enough time.”
Shante and Frye both leave the club and get into the car. Shante drives the car and takes Frye to her house. After dropping her off, she immediately gets on the highway to head back home.
The Fatal Car Accident
She was driving calmly on the highway because she had such a great time at the club and was still enjoying the moment when suddenly, there’s a loud crash, and something hits her car badly.
She becomes extremely panicked when she sees that her car’s windshield is shattered, and a person is stuck in it. The person was badly injured due to the accident, with half of his body inside the car and the other half outside.
Who Was the Victim?
Before we move forward in the story, let us tell you a little about the person who collided with Shante’s car. Why was he on the highway, and didn’t he know that pedestrians shouldn’t walk on the highway because it could lead to accidents at any time? What was his mental state? Let us explain.
The man’s name was Bugs. He was a hardworking mechanic, and his business ran because of his truck. But one day, he had to sell his truck due to his girlfriend’s financial troubles. Bugs wanted to help his girlfriend in any way possible so she could overcome her financial problems, so he gave her whatever money he had. However, in the process of helping her, he himself fell into financial trouble and no longer had enough money to pay the installments for his truck.
Because of the missed payments, Bugs’ truck was repossessed. First, his girlfriend was in trouble, and then Bugs got caught in the same whirlpool. When his truck was taken away, he could no longer work because his entire business depended on it.
Now, he couldn’t earn any more money, which led to him failing to pay all his bills. Due to these dire circumstances, he was even evicted from his home, and Bugs, who once lived a prosperous life, became homeless. A hardworking man was left stranded on the streets by his girlfriend.
Bugs’ Struggle and Downfall
Over the next two years, Bugs’ life was filled with restlessness and struggle. Sometimes he spent nights on the streets, and other times he looked for space in homeless shelters. Life offered him various opportunities, but none were enough to fully support him. Then, one night, when the city streets were deserted and the winds were blowing mysteriously, Bugs was lost in deep thought, walking unconsciously.
As he tried to cross a dangerous section of the highway, suddenly, a loud crash echoed, and there was a powerful collision when Bugs was hit by a speeding car. It was Shante’s car, which was moving so fast that Bugs collided with the windshield and got stuck in it. His body was half inside the glass and half hanging outside.
Shante’s Panic and Guilt
A loud scream escapes Shante’s mouth, and she is overwhelmed with panic. She says to herself, “What just happened?” With trembling hands, she pulls the car over to the side of the road and steps out to assess the situation. In front of her, Bugs’ condition was horrifying, but she was too scared to muster the courage to help him.
Shante gathered her courage and tried to pull him out of the windshield, but as soon as she touched his injured body, she instinctively stepped back. Trying to console herself, she says, “I can’t do this,” and gets back into the car. After that, she leaves Bugs in that condition and starts driving away.
It seemed like Shante would immediately take Bugs to a hospital so he could get medical attention, but instead, she drives straight home and parks the car in the garage. She then goes to her room and starts crying uncontrollably. Her eyes were filled with tears of fear, guilt, and helplessness, and she had no idea how to get out of this situation or how to help the injured man.
The Aftermath of the Accident
Then, suddenly, she hears screams coming from the garage. It was none other than the injured man, who was now in extreme pain and barely conscious. He was severely injured but still alive. Shante, with trembling steps, goes to the garage and breaks into tears upon seeing Bugs. Helplessly, she repeatedly says, “Forgive me, this was all an accident!”
That night, Shante goes to the garage several times, and each time she apologizes to Bugs upon seeing him. But she neither touches him nor provides any help. Her words were filled with helplessness: “I hurt you, but in these circumstances, there’s nothing I can do. I can’t do anything.”
Shante’s Professional Background
You’ll be surprised to know that Shante was not an ordinary woman who would feel helpless or clueless upon seeing an injured person. She was a professional nurse and worked as a certified nursing assistant, meaning she was a skilled healthcare professional trained to provide medical assistance.
She knew exactly what kind of medical help Bugs needed immediately. But surprisingly, she ignored the demands of her profession and the principles of human compassion.
Instead of helping Bugs, Shante called her close friend Frye and, in a panicked and tearful voice, asked her to come to her house immediately. Frye, seeing her condition, quickly arrives at her house and asks Shante, “What happened?” Shante takes her to the garage, where the sight of Bugs’ injured body stuck in the windshield shocks Frye.
Frye panics upon seeing this and says, “I can’t be part of this!” She immediately decides to leave, and surprisingly, Shante also leaves Bugs in that condition and goes to Frye’s house with her. Both friends try to sleep peacefully in the dark of the night, while Bugs remains in the garage, struggling between life and death.
The Failed Attempt to Cover Up
The next morning, Shante takes Frye’s car and goes to meet another friend, Clay. Clay had recently been released from jail, and Shante hoped he could help her in this situation. She talks to Clay and brings him to her house, where she shows him Bugs’ condition in the garage.
Unfortunately, by that time, Bugs had already lost his life due to the severity of his injuries and the lack of help. If Shante had provided medical assistance or taken him to the hospital, he could have survived. But because Shante failed to provide medical help, he lost his life.
Clay is horrified upon seeing the body but quickly regains his composure and calls his cousin for help. Now, the three of them—Shante, Clay, and his cousin—make a plan to dispose of the body.
In the silence of the night, they wrap Bugs’ body in a blanket, put it in Shante’s car, and head to a nearby park. There, they dump the body in a deserted area and bring the blanket back, leaving no trace behind.
The Discovery of Bugs’ Body
The next morning, two elderly men walking in the park spot Bugs’ body and immediately report it to the nearby fire station, informing them that a body was found in the park. The fire department quickly notifies the police, and law enforcement officers arrive at the scene to recover Bugs’ body. They begin their investigation, but they have no witnesses or clues to lead them to the truth about who the deceased was or how his body ended up there.
Shante’s Downfall and Arrest
Meanwhile, Shante tries to return to her normal life. But she often feels depressed and confused, constantly worrying about being caught. Despite all the fear, it seemed like she might have gotten away with murder—four months had already passed since they disposed of Bugs’ body.
One night, Shante was at a party with her friends. She was feeling great because, as mentioned earlier, she loved going to parties and having a good time. At this party, she was trying to improve her mood and was enjoying herself. She was trying to forget about Bugs’ accident. After having a few drinks at the party, she loses control and becomes a bit talkative.
In this state, Shante starts telling people an astonishing story about how, once, while driving home drunk from a club, she hit a person who ended up losing his life. A friend at the party, who was listening to this story, becomes terrified and immediately goes home to call the police and report it.
The very next day, the police arrive at Shante’s house with a search warrant. They find Shante’s car, which had collided with Bugs, and the car still bore the marks of the accident, along with stains of Bugs’ blood. Shante had been so scared that she neither cleaned the car nor got it repaired.
In light of this evidence, the police arrest Shante. She is interrogated, and her case is presented in court, where she is sentenced to 50 years in prison for the crime of murder. Along with her, Clay is sentenced to 10 years, and his cousin is sentenced to 9 years.
Meanwhile, Frye is granted immunity in exchange for testifying against the three of them.
