FRISCO, Texas — A tragic altercation at a track meet on Wednesday morning led to the death of a 17-year-old North Texas student, with another teen now facing a murder charge.
According to Frisco Police, the incident occurred around 10 a.m. when a dispute between two teenagers escalated into violence.
One teen allegedly stabbed the other outside Kuykendall Stadium, where the University Interscholastic League’s (UIL) District 11-5A championship track meet was taking place.
First responders attempted to save the victim’s life through CPR and blood administration, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities identified the victim as Austin Metcalf, a 17-year-old student at Memorial High School.
Police arrested 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony of Frisco, who has been charged with first-degree murder. As of Thursday morning, no bail had been set.
Frisco school officials informed students and parents about the tragedy through email, while a prayer vigil was held Wednesday evening at Hope Fellowship Church to honor Metcalf.
Family Speaks Out
Austin’s father, Jeff Metcalf, revealed that his son was stabbed after telling Anthony he was “in the wrong spot.” He added that Austin did not know the suspect.
Austin’s twin brother, Hunter, witnessed the attack and tried to save him. “They were identical twins. His brother held him, trying to stop the bleeding, but he died in his arms,” Jeff Metcalf told NBC News.
GoFundMe Launched
Jeff Metcalf started a GoFundMe campaign to honor his son’s memory, highlighting Austin’s dedication to sports and academics.
“He was a bright young man with a great future ahead,” Metcalf wrote. The campaign had raised over $60,000 as of Thursday morning.
The Frisco Police Department is investigating the case.
