Staff Report
Green Town Police, Lahore, registered a case against six policemen, including the investigation in-charge, on charges of demanding a king’s ransom of Rs 20 million for the liberty of a man who was implicated in a false case.
False Implication and Torture Allegations
A woman identified as Nazeeran Bibi, submitting an application to the Lahore city police chief, Bilal Siddique Kamyana, alleged that the assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Green Town police station had exchanged words with her son, Adnan. To settle the score, she alleged that the ASI had hatched a conspiracy in connivance with the investigation in-charge of Green Town police station, Rehan Butt, Sub-Inspector, and Constable Imran to implicate Adnan in a false case.
Subsequently, she said the accused policemen arrested her son from College Road and subjected him to severe torture in custody. On being informed of the detention of Adnan, his two brothers went to the police station to meet him. The accused policemen locked them up unlawfully and let loose a brutal attack on them.
Police Vandalism and Looting
By handcuffing her son, she alleged the police visited her home where the policemen vandalized the house belongings, looted cash of Rs 140,000, a mobile phone, a motorcycle, and other valuable items from the house. She said the policemen also escaped with the national identity cards of her sons.
Nazeeran Bibi alleged that policemen harassed her and assaulted her at gunpoint when she resisted to foil the illegal arrest of her other son.
Extortion and Threats
After causing trouble, she claimed that the next day ASI Rana Asif forcibly entered her house along with another officer and categorically demanded Rs 20 million for the release of her son. In case of failure, she alleged the policemen had threatened to kill him in a fake shootout.
To grease the palm of policemen, only to save Adnan’s life, Nazeeran Bibi claimed she sold her family car very cheaply and gave Rs 3.5 million to the police. She said the payment had been made through Junaid, nephew of the lady.
She said the large amount of bribe did not satiate the policemen who again turned up and asked for more money.
An informant of Rehan Butt, was made the complainant in the case registered against her son Adnan.
