The Odessa Police Department reported a nearly 26% decline in violent crimes last year, along with a 6.5% reduction in property crimes.

2023 vs. 2024 Crime Statistics

In 2023, there were 2,620 violent crimes, which dropped to 1,942 in 2024. Property crimes decreased from 3,001 in 2023 to 2,804 last year.

Police Chief Mike Gerke credited various factors for the decline but emphasized that improvements can still be made.

“No single factor leads to a positive outcome. It’s a combination of police efforts, community involvement, and a shift in public attitude towards crime,” Gerke stated.

Proactive Policing and Community Engagement

Gerke explained that the police department continues analyzing crime data to identify high-crime areas. Officers not only increase patrols in these zones but also educate residents on crime prevention. “We knock on doors, distribute flyers, and inform residents about crime trends. For example, if auto burglaries increase in an area, we remind people to lock their cars and remove valuables,” Gerke said.

Focus on Crime Prevention

The department’s main focus is crime prevention rather than just making arrests. “If there is no victim, there is no crime. Our goal is to prevent victimization rather than just making arrests after the fact,” Gerke added.

Officer Dedication and Technological Advancements

Despite being short-staffed, the crime reduction highlights the dedication of Odessa officers, according to Gerke. “If anyone deserves credit, it’s the hardworking officers on the streets. They are committed to protecting the city,” he said. Technology investments, including license plate recognition systems, surveillance cameras, and data tracking software, have also helped reduce crime, he noted.

Increase in Drug-Related Offenses

However, some crime categories saw an increase. Drug offenses rose by nearly 22% in 2024, with 952 cases compared to 783 the previous year.

“The rise in drug-related offenses reflects our increased focus on cracking down on drug crimes,” Gerke explained. The department regularly evaluates its resource allocation. Targeting drug crimes often leads to reductions in theft and violent crimes.

Focus on Dismantling Criminal Networks

Recently, several THC-vape-related arrests were made. However, detectives were not specifically targeting vape pens, Gerke clarified. “Our main focus was dismantling local gangs, including juvenile groups and older individuals causing trouble. The vape-related charges were a legal means to remove criminals from the streets,” he said.

Among those arrested, three were on felony probation for serious offenses, including aggravated robbery, aggravated assault, and retaliation.

Surge in Financial and Cybercrimes

The department also reported a 104% surge in financial scams and a significant increase in cybercrimes.

These crimes are harder to solve as many perpetrators operate from outside the country. To address this, the department plans to enhance public awareness on how to recognize and avoid scams.
