Houston, Texas – On March 12, 2025, authorities arrested 34-year-old Chance Zane Chavez for allegedly killing his wife, Kristen Chavez, 32. Investigators say he used a clothing iron as a weapon.
Officers found Chavez covered in blood on his arms, legs, and clothes, while Kristen’s body showed signs of blunt force trauma inside their home on Emma Forest Street.
Before the tragic event, Chavez reportedly abandoned his wife’s four dogs on a nearby highway.
Thanks to the community’s efforts, three of the dogs were rescued, but one, a Dachshund named Peaches, was found dead, according to local officials.

At approximately 7:20 a.m. on March 12, Houston police responded to a distress call from the Chavez residence.
Upon arrival, officers encountered Chance Chavez at the entrance, hands raised and covered in blood.
He was immediately taken into custody as police secured the scene.
Inside the home, officers discovered Kristen Chavez’s lifeless body, showing severe blunt-force injuries.
Emergency responders confirmed her death at the scene. Authorities suspect she was repeatedly struck with a clothing iron.
Reports indicate that earlier that day, Chavez abandoned Kristen’s four dogs along Katy Freeway. Kristen, who adored her pets, was deeply distressed when she learned about it.
Volunteers and neighbors helped recover three dogs, but Peaches was found dead.
A neighbor contacted police after seeing Chavez, covered in blood, pleading for help. Responding officers found him standing at the home’s entrance, appearing disoriented.
Upon securing the scene, they discovered Kristen’s body inside a bedroom.
Kristen’s family described her relationship with Chavez as troubled. Her mother, Laura Bell, revealed that Kristen had hoped things would improve.
“She always tried to see the good in people, even when they mistreated her,” said Devin Cervantes, her brother.
Following his arrest, Chavez was initially held on a $250,000 bond.
However, after an online petition gathered over 9,000 signatures, the bond was raised to $500,000. Chavez remains in Harris County Jail as he awaits trial.
