Multi-Vehicle Crash Kills Five, Including Infant and Child, in Austin

Five people, including a child and an infant, died late Thursday night in a severe 17-vehicle crash on southbound I-35 near Parmer Lane, according to Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services.

Emergency responders arrived shortly before 11:30 p.m. and found several people trapped inside vehicles, needing rescue.

Authorities confirmed that 11 others were taken to hospitals, some with critical injuries. Among the injured, three children were rushed to Dell Children’s Hospital, with one child suffering potentially life-threatening injuries.

Several adults with serious injuries were transported to Dell Seton Medical Center and St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center.

A 37-year-old man, Solomun Weldekeal Araya, was arrested in connection with the crash.

He faces five counts of intoxicated manslaughter with a vehicle and two counts of intoxication assault with a vehicle causing serious bodily injury.
