CONROE, Texas — The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam where callers pretend to be law enforcement officers to demand payments.
Officials stress that the Sheriff’s Office will never ask for money over the phone under any circumstances.
According to a press release, scammers are impersonating deputies or officers from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, using various names to appear more convincing.
These callers often request payments through unusual methods, such as Bitcoin or gift cards, and may use spoofed phone numbers to make it seem like the call is coming from the Sheriff’s Office.
Residents are urged to hang up immediately and contact the Sheriff’s Office directly at 936-538-5900 to verify any suspicious claims.
The department also warns of other scams, including fake bonding companies asking for bail money.
Authorities advise the public not to make rushed payments or share personal information over the phone without confirming the request’s authenticity. They encourage residents to spread the word about these scams to help prevent others from falling victim and to remain alert against fraudulent activities.
