Elizabeth Johnson gave birth to a baby boy named Gabriel on May 3. She and the baby’s father, Logan McQueary, chose the name together.
Logan noticed that Johnson struggled with motherhood. When Gabriel cried, she sometimes placed him alone in a room so she would not hear him.
In June, a heated argument about parenting erupted between the couple. Shortly after, Johnson flew to Boston with Gabriel to visit her grandmother. On her way back to Arizona in August, during a layover in Indianapolis, she met Tammi Peters Smith.
Johnson, visibly upset and holding Gabriel, caught Smith’s attention. Their conversation led to Smith and her husband expressing interest in adopting the baby.
Johnson returned to Arizona without Gabriel. Authorities later found the baby safe at the Peters Smith home.
Following Gabriel’s return, a family court judge awarded joint custody to Johnson and Logan. Johnson was given custody first. However, just three days later, when Logan went to pick up his son, Johnson refused, telling him he would never see Gabriel again.
Johnson later claimed she smothered Gabriel and dumped his body, but Logan did not believe her.
Police confirmed Johnson drove from Tempe, Arizona, to San Antonio, Texas, with Gabriel. She was last seen with him nine days later. The next morning, she boarded a Greyhound bus to Miami — alone.
When questioned by police, Johnson gave a conflicting account, stating she handed Gabriel over to an unknown couple at a park near her hotel.
Despite thorough searches and investigations, Gabriel, who would now be 15 years old, remains missing.
