The trial of Xavier Davis, accused of the chilling triple homicide of a Houston family in 2021, has begun.
Prosecutors and defense attorneys are presenting their arguments about the tragic night.
According to KHOU, Davis is facing capital murder charges for the deaths of 29-year-old Donyavia Lagway, her husband, 35-year-old Gregory Carhee, and their 6-year-old daughter, Harmony Carhee.
Prosecutors claim that Alexus Chenelle Williams orchestrated the murders, allegedly hiring Davis as an act of revenge after her affair with Lagway ended.
Reports indicate that Williams even permitted Davis to take any money he could find in the victims’ home after the killings.
Disturbingly, she may have watched the murders unfold via FaceTime.
Amidst the horror, the couple’s 10-year-old daughter survived despite being critically injured.
She played dead, later caring for her younger brother until help arrived.
“This courageous young girl, despite severe injuries, managed to lock the door and call for help,” former prosecutor Sean Teare told KHOU.
Her bravery has been widely recognized.
This case marks a rare instance where Harris County prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
According to Nicole Hensley of the Houston Chronicle, if Davis is found guilty, the jury will decide whether he should receive capital punishment.
During opening statements around 10 a.m., lawyers detailed how a young witness, shot in the arm, heard her father’s desperate but futile plea to their attacker, telling Davis they had nothing left to give.
Initially, investigators suspected a second person’s involvement, which led them to Williams. After gaining access to her phone, authorities discovered numerous messages exchanged with Davis, indicating a premeditated attack.
The shocking crime has left Houston in mourning, with Donyavia’s cousin, Ronette Terrell, struggling to comprehend the brutality that claimed the lives of her loved ones—especially the innocent children.
