A former Houston police officer has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for shooting his wife in the face and hand during a domestic dispute in 2023.

Galib Waheed Chowdhury, 31, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault of a family member causing serious bodily harm as part of a plea deal, according to court records.

The incident occurred at the couple’s northwest Houston apartment, where Chowdhury initially reported to 911 that he had accidentally shot his wife while attempting to stop an intruder.

However, investigators found no signs of forced entry or any evidence supporting his claim of a break-in.

Following his arrest, Chowdhury was suspended and later dismissed from the Houston Police Department.

He had been with the force for just over two years, according to the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.

His personnel file showed no prior complaints, citations, or criminal history. The couple had been married for approximately a year before the tragic incident.

The case underscores the severe legal consequences of domestic violence, even for those sworn to uphold the law.
