Houston police arrested a 21-year-old man last week for allegedly opening fire inside a nightclub in south Houston, injuring five people earlier this month, according to a press release on Tuesday.
Kendrick Montgomery faces charges of aggravated assault — mass shooting, a first-degree felony, linked to the March 2 incident.
Officers responded that morning to a shooting at The Address nightclub and restaurant, located at 3333 Raleigh St. Emergency responders provided first aid, applying tourniquets and chest seals to the injured, Houston Police Department Assistant Chief Luis Menendez-Sierra said during a press briefing.
Menendez-Sierra mentioned that about 20 minutes before the shooting, there was an altercation, though it was unclear if it was connected to the attack.
A 36-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman remained in stable condition at the hospital as of Tuesday. Two other men, aged 31 and 58, and another 43-year-old woman were treated and released.
According to the press release, multiple witnesses told detectives that an unknown man driving a white sedan stopped in front of the bar’s entrance. He exited the car with a rifle and fired several shots at staff and customers near the front door before speeding away westbound on Raleigh Street.
The investigation identified Montgomery as the suspect. He was arrested on March 7 by the Houston Police Department’s SWAT, South Central, and Southeast Patrol Crime Suppression teams, with support from FBI Houston agents.
Montgomery was taken to the Harris County Jail. A magistrate judge set his bail at $5 million on Saturday, emphasizing the seriousness of the charges and the threat Montgomery poses.
“Anything less would fail to recognize the gravity of the offense and the ongoing danger the defendant presents,” the judge stated in court documents.
