Houston, Texas—A tragic shooting at a McDonald’s restaurant on March 16, 2025, claimed the life of 61-year-old Jorge Arbaiza.
He was inside ordering Happy Meals for his grandchildren when gunfire erupted between two groups.
His family, waiting outside, could only watch helplessly as the violence unfolded.
A Devoted Grandfather Caught in the Crossfire
Arbaiza, known for his deep love for his grandkids, had just entered the restaurant when shots rang out.
His wife, Teresa, who had been married to him for nearly 40 years, remained in the car with their grandchildren.
She recalled the terrifying moment, saying, “I could not leave the kids alone.
They were crying and scared.” Moments before the chaos, she spotted a gunman in her rearview mirror.
As bullets flew, Arbaiza was struck multiple times. In his final moments, he made the sign of the cross and began to pray.
A medical helicopter transported him to a hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez condemned the shooting as a “senseless” act of violence that has shaken the local community.
Shooter Arrested and Investigation Underway
Authorities swiftly launched an investigation, reviewing surveillance footage to piece together the events.
Within days, police arrested 24-year-old Antonio Ridge, charging him with Arbaiza’s murder. Ridge remains in Harris County Jail as detectives continue their inquiry.
One alarming discovery was that the handgun used in the shooting had been illegally modified with a “Glock switch.”
This device converts a semi-automatic weapon into a fully automatic firearm, significantly increasing its lethality.
Calls for Stricter Gun Laws
In response to the tragedy, Sheriff Gonzalez has voiced strong support for new legislation to criminalize possession of modified firearms.
He emphasized the growing danger such weapons pose to both civilians and law enforcement.
“These switches are a serious threat to our community,” he stated. “Let’s pass this bill in honor of Mr. Arbaiza.”
Gun violence in Texas remains a contentious issue, with incidents like this reigniting debates on responsible gun ownership and public safety.
Community Mourns the Loss
The McDonald’s where the shooting occurred has extended its condolences.
Owner Stuart Brown expressed his sorrow, stating, “Our thoughts are with the victim’s family. We are fully cooperating with authorities.”
For many, this tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by gun violence.
As the investigation unfolds, Houston residents are left grappling with the devastating loss of an innocent man who simply wanted to buy a meal for his grandchildren.
