FAISALABAD: The Government College Women University Faisalabad marked World Book and Copyright Day 2025 with a colorful blend of thought-provoking and culturally meaningful activities that truly stole the show.
The celebration hit the nail on the head by reflecting the Vice Chancellor’s vision of nurturing a deep reading culture, sparking critical thinking, and safeguarding cultural identity through the timeless power of literature.
The event was organized under the dynamic patronage of Prof. Dr. Kanwal Ameen (T.I.), the Vice Chancellor of the Government College Women University Faisalabad.
Dr. Kanwal Ameen Highlights the Irreplaceable Value of Books
In her keynote address, Dr. Kanwal Ameen emphasized that while technology enhances learning, it can never replace the timeless value of books. She advocated for integrating literature with local languages to preserve cultural identity and heritage.
The Vice Chancellor also praised Librarian Ms. Misbah Bashir and the Library Committee, led by Dr. Saima Akram, for organizing the event with careful planning and effective execution.
A major highlight of the day was the inauguration of DSpace, GCWUF’s digital repository, launched by the Vice Chancellor.
Designed to archive and showcase the university’s research and creative works, it marks a progressive step toward academic digitization and global accessibility.
Symbolic Awareness Walk Revives the Spirit of Book Culture
The event featured a symbolic Awareness Walk led by Pro Vice-Chancellor Dr. Zill-i-Huma Nazli, joined by heads of departments, coordinators, and students—the walk called for the revival of book culture in everyday spaces.
The “Meet the Authors/Poets” session spotlighted emerging voices Dr. Ghulam Murtaza Aatir, Dr. Tahira Iqbal, and Dr. Abdul Aziz, moderated by Dr. Touheed Ahmad, providing deep insights into the philosophy of writing and authorship.
A dynamic Panel Discussion titled “Users’ Expectations from Libraries in an AI-Driven World”, moderated by Dr. Farhat Jabeen, brought together voices including Dr. Shazia Adnan, Dr. Saiqa Sadiq, Dr. Tayyaba Anwar, Dr. Rukhsana Baloch, and Ms. Suneeza Hamid to explore the future role of libraries in a rapidly changing digital landscape.
Quiz Competition Engages Students in Literary Learning
Adding an engaging and competitive edge to the day, Ms. Hira Rafiq moderated a Quiz Competition on books and literary knowledge, sparking enthusiasm and reinforcing literary awareness among students.
A special segment featured Dr. Asim Mehmood (Chairman, Applied Linguistics, GCUF) presenting his project “Shahmukhi Punjabi WordNet,” a digital initiative to preserve and enrich regional language and identity.
Literary Stamp Exhibition Links Philately with Culture
Another striking attraction was the Stamp Exhibition by the Allama Iqbal Stamps Society, Lahore, showcasing rare and historic literary-themed stamps. The display connected philately with literature, offering a visual journey through the legacies of great thinkers and writers.
The event concluded with an Author Tribute Ceremony, during which faculty members who authored books in the past year were honored with souvenirs to celebrate their academic contributions.
