GALVESTON, Texas – A man responsible for a fatal golf cart crash that killed a family of four in 2022 has been sentenced to 82 years in prison.

Miguel Angel Espinoza received the sentence on Thursday, following his guilty plea earlier in the week.

A jury determined 18-year sentences for each of the four counts of intoxicated manslaughter, along with 10 additional years for intoxicated assault.

According to prosecutors, Espinoza was drunk driving when he ran a stop sign and crashed his SUV into a golf cart carrying 49-year-old Felipe Bentancur, 25-year-old Destiny Uvalle, 14-year-old Brailyn Cantu, and 4-year-old Kaisyn Bentancur.

The family from Rosenberg had been visiting Galveston at the time.

Tragically, all four passengers were killed in the collision, while April Betancur, Felipe’s wife, suffered serious injuries.

Witnesses at the scene informed Galveston police officers that a man and a woman were seen walking away from the wreck.

Authorities soon located Espinoza, administered field sobriety tests, and confirmed he was intoxicated.

Lab results later revealed his blood alcohol level was 0.207—more than twice the Texas legal limit of 0.08.

In court, Judge Rebecca Millo ruled that all five sentences would run consecutively, as requested by prosecutors.

Espinoza will need to serve at least half of his 82-year sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
