HOUSTON, Texas – A Houston police officer fired multiple shots at suspects in a stolen vehicle after they allegedly tried to run over officers during a late-night confrontation.
The incident began just before 11:30 p.m. Thursday when Houston police received reports of an armed robbery involving the theft of a black Ford Mustang in northeast Houston, said HPD Assistant Chief Luis Menendez.
As patrol officers searched the area, they spotted the stolen car parked at Cliff Tuttle Park, located in the 6200 block of Lyons Avenue.
According to Menendez, three police units arrived at the scene and ordered the suspects to exit the car.
However, instead of complying, the driver reportedly shifted the car into gear and sped toward the officers, prompting one of them to open fire.
The officer discharged his weapon several times, hitting the vehicle, Menendez said.
A chase began shortly afterward but ended quickly when the Mustang hit a curb near the 7500 block of Force Street.
The suspects abandoned the vehicle and tried to flee on foot but were soon taken into custody.
Investigators recovered a stolen handgun from the vehicle and found a semiautomatic rifle that had been discarded during the pursuit.
The officer who fired his weapon has been with the department for just one year.
The three suspects, aged 18, 19, and 20, were not immediately identified by authorities.
