A recent report from the Better Business Bureau reveals a sharp increase in online scams and identity theft across the U.S., with Alaska seeing nearly 600 scam reports between 2021 and 2024.

Scammers are now turning to artificial intelligence to craft more convincing lies, making it harder for people to recognize and avoid fraud.

AI tools can mimic voices, generate fake documents, and even impersonate trusted contacts.

Cameron Nakashima from the Better Business Bureau shared his own close call. He was seconds away from giving a scammer remote access to his computer.

“My finger was an inch above clicking the mouse,” he said. “Something felt off, so I hung up. The guy called me again the next day, but by then I was sure it was a scam.”

The BBB urges everyone to take steps to protect themselves online. Use strong, unique passwords. Turn on two-factor authentication.

Check your financial accounts often for any suspicious activity.

If you believe you’ve been targeted, report the scam right away. You can file a report with the Better Business Bureau or contact local law enforcement.

Being cautious and staying informed is the best defense against today’s smarter, AI-powered scams.
